FILM REPRESENTATIONS
A variety of methods can be used by filmmakers to introduce and develop characters. They represent a character through their choice of camera angles, acting, mise-en-scene, editing, lighting, and sound. The majority of movies portray a certain quality or story using certain conventions or stereotypical beliefs. Both negative and positive representations are possible. Representations are crucial and must be used with extreme care. For instance, in some films, people of colour are portrayed in stereotypical ways that have come under fire. The same is true for the portrayal of women, who are almost always cast as supporting characters rather than as the main protagonists. But throughout time, these depictions have improved, and now we can see increasing representation of women and people of colour.
