Genre A film genre is a motion-picture category based on similarities either in the narrative elements, aesthetic approach, or the emotional response to the film. In the early days of cinema, genres were much more uniform and defined. Just as they were in literature and other forms of art and entertainment, people would go to the theater to watch a war film, a musical, or a comedy . The basic genres were well defined and included some of the following: Action: An action story is similar to adventure, and the protagonist usually takes a risky turn, which leads to desperate situations (including explosions, fight scenes, daring escapes, etc.).
